Before reading the book, please answer the questions below:
  • Why do you think the author, Graeme Base, called the main character Uno?
  • What do you think this story is about? How does the title and cover help you make your predictions?
  • How does the rhyme on the title page prepare you for the theme of the story?

While reading the book, please answer the questions below:
  • Was Uno afraid when he first arrived at the forest? Explain.
  • Was it obvious that the forest would change once Uno decided to live there? Do you think he knew this? Explain.
  • How did Uno’s little cottage affect the forest?
  • Why did the other people decide to settle in the forest, rather than just visit?
  • What eventually happened to the forest? How do you think Uno felt about this? Explain.
  • On the grey morning that the people of the city woke up and decided to leave, where might they have gone? Explain.

Good Samaritan 'victim of set-up'

A GOOD Samaritan who was bashed after going to the aid of what she believed was an elderly woman having trouble walking her dog may have been the victim of a set-up.

Tracy Hayden, 38, was driving a blue Kia Rio sedan on Tarneit Road, between Sayers and Hogans roads in Tarneit, when she stopped to assist the woman about 8.15pm on April 13. She saw a woman struggling to catch a dog she suspected had broken loose.

After getting out of her car, she was assaulted and forced to the ground by a man who stood over her and demanded she hand over the keys.
"She was shuffling after it, so I assumed she was an elderly lady," she said.

"After pulling over and running after the dog, before I was able to reach the woman, I felt this blow to my back which knocked me down.
"As I turned around, I saw this guy who I hadn't seen before standing over me."

Ms Hayden fought back and the man fled on foot in a northerly direction along Tarneit Road.

"At the time, I made a conscious decision to start kicking him in one particular area," she said.

"After he ran off, I stood up and looked around to find the woman and she was nowhere to be seen, which has led me to think it may have been a set-up."

Although sore and shaken, Ms Hayden said she was lucky to escape relatively unscathed.

"It wasn't until I got home and my children were in bed that I realised how much worse it could have been," she said.

Wyndham's Detective Sergeant Dennis Williams described the attack as "cowardly".

"It obviously would have been quite frightening for the victim," he said.
"It's an unusual set of circumstances - it may have been an opportunistic attack."

The man, who is described as Caucasian, about 156 centimetres with a medium build, was wearing black tracksuit pants and a black hooded jumper. Police would like to speak to the woman who was walking her dog and any witnesses to the incident.
